In a circular addressed to members, Zimta chief executive officer Sifiso Ndlovu said the congress would run from August 21 to 24 under the theme Education for Equality and Development Demands Professionally Trained, Well-Supported and Motivated Teachers.

“By this circular we invite provinces to constitute their national delegates to the 34th annual conference to be held in Harare at Rainbow Towers. The conference is hosted by Masvingo province, sadly outside Masvingo boundaries,” Ndlovu said.

According to the circular, each province should have between nine and 12 delegates.

“Provinces wishing to bring in additional observers shall do so at an additional cost paid upfront except host provinces who may stagger payment over two months’ instalments,” Ndlovu added. About 250 delegates drawn from Zimta’s membership from the country’s 10 provinces, key stakeholders from the ministries of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, Education International and Sadc countries teachers’ unions representatives are expected to attend.

Zimta boasts of being one of the country’s largest professional teachers’ trade unions, with a membership of about 45 000. At previous conferences, teachers demanded improved salaries and better working conditions and a stake in the empowerment drive.
