They walked away with $1 000 while another Mutare group, Nice to Nice, were the first runner-up and they went home with $500 while the second runner-up from the eastern border city Neighbours took home $300.

Contemporary outfit Mark Sounds is now expected to raise the province’s flag high at the national finals on a date yet to be announced.

In an interview with NewsDay after winning the top accolade, band leader Khulumani “Dhewa” Moyo said they deserved to win the prize after putting up a strong performance.

“It was a tough competition, but we have been consistent in our performances in recent years. But I believe that this year we have managed to put up a strong showing and we deserved to win it. Our aim now is to win the national prize. It is not going to be easy, but I believe we have the talent that can stand the heat,” he said.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe Manicaland provincial manager Jonah Muchayi said Mark Sounds had been consistent in their performances before urging promoters to utilise on the event to identify talent.

“I urge promoters, hotels, and entertainment venue owners to take advantage of this festival by identifying suitable performers to showcase at their respective areas in exchange for agreeable payment,” he said.

“I would like to congratulate Mark Sounds for winning the top honours. They have been consistent in recent years and they have been finally rewarded. Our hope is that they are going to carry high the flag of this province high,” added Muchayi.
