PREPARATIONS for the second edition of the prestigious Mining Media Awards (MMA) set to be held on August 28 this year are at an advanced stage with organisers calling on journalists to enter the competition.

The MMA, co-hosted by the MEJRKH Communications and Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe, were meant to improve journalistic excellence in mining matters and positively influence understanding of the industry, which was now a key driver of economic growth in Zimbabwe.
In a statement yesterday, MEJRKH Communications managing consultant Munyaradzi Hwengwere said the awards will be running under the theme “Driving excellence in mining reporting”.
“The Mining Media Awards 2015 are meant to improve journalistic excellence in mining matters and positively influence understanding of the industry, which is now a key driver of economic growth in Zimbabwe,” Hwengwere said.
“Last year’s awards ceremony was a tremendous success, receiving support from the media, mining fraternity and government alike.
“In an endeavour to promote impactful and objective coverage of the mining sector, the 2015 awards will be preceded by training sessions on basic mining appreciation for journalists across the country in partnership with the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists.”
In the inaugural awards, NewsDay’s journalist Obey Manayiti won the Print Media Category and the Overall prize for the story that chronicled how communities in Mutoko were being negatively affected by black granite mining operations.
