Speaking during a Press briefing also attended by Zifa officials, board member Fungai Chihuri and communications manager Xolisani Gwesela, Shereni said Zimbabwe had talented sportsmen and women and he wanted to help promote sports in the country through the establishment of the High Performance Centre.

“I want to try and promote sports in the country. Zimbabwe has got a lot of talent and the main purpose of this testimonial match is to establish a foundation — the Harlington Shereni Foundation. I want it to be a High Performance Centre which will balance education and sports,” he said.

“Having played for the national team, I have been working with Zifa in all this and the foundation will also cater for other sports like cricket, rugby and athletics. Having played for a long time in Europe, we have made contacts and I believe we need to make use of them because in football it’s about who you know. I have even spoken to my friends who have played in Europe that we cannot just let our relations with those clubs in Europe die just like that.

“We need to make use of them.”

Chihuri said: “We want to applaud Shereni for ploughing back. He had an illustrious football career which started humbly and we are fully supportive of him. We stand steadfast in supporting the realisation of his dream to develop talent in the country.”

Over 12 players from European clubs are expected for the testimonial match and most of them have already confirmed their participation with Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud being one of the big names expected in Harare.

The French international previously played in Ligue 1 alongside Shereni.

Other stars expected at the testimonial match against the Warriors are El Hadji Diouf of Senegal, Nigeria’s Yakubu, South Africa’s Steven Pienaar and former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe.
