The objectives of the workshop were to improve the safety and security of players, officials, media, fans and stakeholders at football match venues, to improve match organisation before, during and after matches, dealing with issues of violence and hooliganism at venues before, during and after matches and to enhance the image of football in Zimbabwe.

The workshop was conducted by three facilitators, Kennedy Ndebele (PSL CEO and Fifa instructor), Brighton Mudzamiri (Fifa integrity and security instructor) and Lovemore Marange (Zifa security officer).

Participants included club security officers, senior Zimbabwe Republic Police representatives and private security stakeholders.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police provided in-depth knowledge and invaluable experience on issues related to security and we hope the PSL club security officers will use the seminar to improve on aspects of safety and security at all football matches,” Ndebele said.

The participants also discussed several topical issues in relation to safety and security.

The workshop emerged with a draft policy document for recommendation to the PSL board of governors who are expected to deliberate on these and many other issuesat a board meeting scheduled for later this month.

All 16 PSL club security officers were represented and at the conclusion of the seminar, they expressed a high level of satisfaction and noted that the seminar enabled them to meet as security stakeholders and share notes with other sectors. The workshop topics included the following:

 The role of a security officer in a football organisation

 Fighting match manipulation (match-fixing)

 Crowd management (prohibited items/acts)

 Management of stewards

 Safety and risk management

 Management of competitions
