Talent Ziki (28) appeared before Mutare magistrate Sekai Chiundura on Monday facing charges of malicious damage to property and physical abuse as defined in section 3(a)(1) of the Domestic Violence Act chapter 5:16.

He was sentenced to 18 months in jail, but will serve an effective one year behind bars after six months were suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainant $850.

It was the State case that on June 7, the accused person, who is also an illegal diamond panner in Marange, approached the complainant Judith Maphosa (38), his ex-girlfriend, seeking reunion.

Maphosa, turned down the proposal and this did not go down well with the accused who retaliated by burning the woman’s kitchen.

The complainant lost property worth $850. On the second count the accused person assaulted Maphosa once below the right eye with a stone as he also attempted to stab her with a knife.

Maphosa, managed to flee the scene, but sustained a swelling below the right eye and was not medically examined. Shepherd Chivarika prosecuted for the State.
