TOBACCO deliveries at both auction and contract floors have slightly improved as compared to the beginning of the season, the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) has said.

Latest statistics from the TIMB show that deliveries at both auction and contract floors were recording daily average purchases of 1,9 million kg for the week ending April 2 2015 as compared to daily throughput which averaged 2,5 million kg in 2014.

Currently auction sales have traded 5,6 million kg at an average price of $1,93 per kg compared to 7,1 million kg which went through the hammer in 2014 at an average price of $2,56 per kg.

TIMB said contract sales for 2015 season at 15,5 million kg were marginally lower than 2014 seasonal contract sales which recorded 15,9 million kg.

In the period under review, TSF bought tobacco at an average price of $2, 07 per kg, BTAF at $1, 71 per kg and PTAF at $1, 90 per kg while the contract average price per kg was $2,77.

Seasonal sales rose to 21,1 million kg at an average price of $2,55 per kg. During the same period last year, cumulative sales were 23,1 million kg averaging $3,04 per kg.

To date, 263 139 bales of tobacco have been accepted, while 18 281 bales have been rejected for various reasons.

TIMB said to date, about 92 833 growers have registered for 2015 season as compared to about 100 925 who had registered by the same period last year.

In its 2015 national budget, government projected a hectarage of 90 000 for tobacco, whose output is projected at 222 million kg but TIMB has revised the projections downwards to 190 million kg due to erratic rainfall.
