Council officials have in the past week making rounds in Mbare tracking residents that have illegally restored water services.

There were also unconfirmed reports that council officials have been moving around clandestinely reconnecting residents.

Harare City spokesperson Michael Chideme recently confirmed that disconnecting defaulters was continuing as they seek to make sure residents pay for the service.

He urged residents not to give money to officials that move around disconnecting service.

“If they are caught they will be arrested and made to pay a fine. Instead of paying the officials moving around they should use that money to go and pay to council so that they can be reconnected,” said Chideme. “Council will restore service to every resident that has shown commitment and the bribe they are giving to the council staff will actually go a long way in reducing their arrears. If the council staffers are caught they will be taken for discplinary hearing.”

The city council early last month disconnected over 1 200 defaulters.

Harare Residents’ Trust director Precious Shumba urged residents to defy council and restore service on their own on the basis that water was a basic human right.
