Schmidt will give remarks on the current state and perspectives of bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Germany, according to a statement released by the German Embassy last Friday.

The envoy will be in the country until tomorrow when he will address a conference held under the theme Assessing Progress on the Implementation of Zimbabwe’s New Constitution: National, Regional and Global Perspectives at Sapes Trust.

The conference was organised by the Max-Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law (MPFDPR), Germany, in collaboration with the Development and Rule of Law Programme (DROP) at the Faculty of Law, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and Sapes Trust.

It will also focus on the chances and challenges deriving from the provisions and the implementation process of Zimbabwe’s New Constitution, the embassy said.

“It aims to contribute to the current dialogue between policy makers, members of the judiciary, civil society organisations and other constitutional experts about progress made and further necessary steps to improve the state of implementation of the 2013 Constitution.”

The conference will bring together key stakeholders in the Zimbabwean constitutional process and experts from South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Germany to discuss various aspects of the 2013 Zimbabwean Constitution.

Zimbabwe adopted a new governance charter following a referendum held in 2013 but concern has been raised over the slow pace of aligning various pieces of legislation to the new constitution and recent reports that government was seeking to “illegally” amend the constitution.
