HARARE City Council has resolved to rope in Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo to help flush out illegal vendors who have invaded virtually the entire central business district and made most pavements impassable.

According to latest minutes of the council’s information and publicity committee, the issue of vendors was now out of control and could only be resolved at central government level.

“The committee also felt that delays in taking enforcement action as soon as illegal activities became evident had also contributed to the problem,” the minutes read in part.

Just like in many other urban centres, Harare City Council has for the past few years fought running battles with the vendors who continue selling their wares at undesignated points and refuse to pay council levies. A fortnight ago, First Lady Grace Mugabe caused a storm when she ordered the Zimbabwe Republic Police and local authorities to allow vendors to sell their wares in the cities without hindrance.
