AMH are the publishers of the flagship daily NewsDay, Southern Eye, The Standard and Zimbabwe Independent.

NewsDay’s Obey Manayiti and Victoria Mtomba came third and fourth respectively, while Moses Mugugunyeki of The Standard came sixth.

The inaugural media awards were organised by the United Nations and other development partners.

UN resident co-ordinator Bishow Parajuli said the media played an important role in national development. Parajuli said every medium had a message and a target audience and all of them aimed at influencing a change in attitude, perception and decision making.

“So far the media has played a very important role in promoting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and in holding governments and international organisations to account on their commitments,” Parajuli said.

“Equally important, the media has also played a great role in mobilising communities around the MDGs and now setting a new set of the global development agenda post-MDGs 2016-2030.”
