Farai Chivandire was demanding $200 monthly maintenance from her father James Chivandire whom she accused of failing to take care of her younger brother in Form Two and herself.

She told the court that since the departure of her mother to seek greener pastures in South Africa a few years ago, she had been forced to scrounge for food and other basic needs as her father who survives on part-time teaching jobs was not providing for them.

However, Chivandire told presiding magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa that he could only afford to give $40 to his underage son, saying he could not maintain his daughter as she was now a major.

“She is turning 19 in a few days and I don’t get much from my pension fund. I am not well and have medical expenses and I also acquired some loans,” Chivandire said.

“I am no longer teaching and I am a student at Bindura University. I am actually failing to pay for my tuition”, he fumed.

However, the court ordered him to pay $140 for the upkeep of his two children with effect from this month end and asked his daughter to file for a garnishee order should her father fail to deposit the money into her account.
