THIRTEEN people died while 18 were seriously injured on Monday night when a Zupco bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a truck

THIRTEEN people died while 18 were seriously injured on Monday night when a Zupco bus, travelling from Malawi to Harare, was involved in an accident with a haulage truck at Mtuli Bridge on the 22km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway.

In statement to confirm the accident Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said the bus driver was trying to avoid a collision with the truck when he lost control, resulting in the bus veering off the road and plunging into a ditch.

According to the Nyathi, 10 people died on the spot while 3 others died on admission to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.

Nyathi said the truck driver Wonderful Nyamurambe – who was travelling towards Mutoko- alleged that he saw a bundle of dumped clothes in the middle of the road and stopped his truck, presuming the bundle was a human being.

The driver told police he was in reversing his truck to avoid running over the bundle when the bus approached and sideswiped the truck, resulting in the accident.

According to the truck driver, he saw these clothes on the roadside and thought it was human being.
