THIRTEEN people died while 18 were seriously injured on Monday night when a Zupco bus, travelling from Malawi to Harare, was involved in an accident with a haulage truck at Mtuli Bridge on the 22km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway.
In statement to confirm the accident Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said the bus driver was trying to avoid a collision with the truck when he lost control, resulting in the bus veering off the road and plunging into a ditch.
According to the Nyathi, 10 people died on the spot while 3 others died on admission to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.
Nyathi said the truck driver Wonderful Nyamurambe – who was travelling towards Mutoko- alleged that he saw a bundle of dumped clothes in the middle of the road and stopped his truck, presuming the bundle was a human being.
The driver told police he was in reversing his truck to avoid running over the bundle when the bus approached and sideswiped the truck, resulting in the accident.
