Such professional osmosis is only possible through rubbing shoulders with fellow professionals.

Human resources (HR) professionals are no exception in this quest for intellectual and professional osmosis.

Professional associations such as the Institute of People Management of Zimbabwe (IPMZ) offer a good platform the fulfilment of such a desire.

This week, I will dwell on why it is important to be part of a professional body as a HR practitioner.

Professional development Professions such as human resources require ongoing and accredited education to remain relevant. In many careers, training and certification of mastery in specific skill areas help members increase their income.

Professional organisations sometimes offer such courses free or at reduced cost for members and do the work of establishing acceptance of their continuing education credits by licensing boards.

Journals and newsletters published by professional organisations provide opportunities for members to polish their written communication skills and expound on or learn about advances in their field.

Access to industry specific information and research resources is another reason people join professional organisations. Public policy influence Professional organisations provide valuable and expert input about policies that would affect members of that profession, whether proposed by a government entity or an industry-guiding body.

For example, the IPMZ is currently working on a regulatory framework that will ensure the profession is not infiltrated by people who masquerade as HR professionals.

Leadership development Professional bodies such IPMZ organise conferences which offer an opportunity for leadership development through various presenters with vast experience in the field of HR.

HR practitioners come out of these conferences better equipped to take the profession to another level.

Networking Meeting and getting to know others in your field provides the priceless opportunity to interact with other professionals and resource suppliers in a relaxed atmosphere.

Attending local and national meetings and conferences reveals your commitment to excellence in your profession and introduces you to other players.

These events also help you to be up to date on trends, developments, new products, vendors and potential opportunities to enhance your career and mentor others.

Additional benefits Membership in a professional organisation serves as an effective marketing tool.

It indicates your professional commitment to potential clients and reassures them of your competency and willingness to stay informed of the latest developments in your field.

Indeed your professional expertise will never be the same again.
