PREMIERSHIP football side ZPC Kariba say refurbishment of their home ground Nyamhunga Stadium is almost done with the club expected to start using the facility early next month.

Club coach Saul Chaminuka yesterday said major works at the stadium had been completed.

“They are almost done and they have told us that it will be ready early July. All the other sections are OK except the VIP grandstand which they are currently working on. The playing turf has been laid and we should start using it for training sessions soon,” said Chaminuka.

There were reports that the handing over of the $750 000 project from the Kariba Town Council to ZPC had been stalled over a $100 000 figure which the club was supposed to pay, but Chaminuka said the money has been paid.

“I’m not sure of the amount involved, but I am reliably informed that the money has been paid and as soon as work on the VIP grandstand is complete, we will start using the stadium.”

Nyamhunga was last year condemned by the Premier Soccer League/Zifa grounds committee because it did not meet their standards after ZPC Kariba won qualification into the elite league.

The 8 000-seater stadium was initially supposed to be ready by mid-April, but the delivery date was pushed back several times amid delays.

After Nyamhunga was condemned, ZPC Kariba adopted Gwanzura Stadium in Harare as their home ground, which is almost 500 kilometres from their Kariba base, meaning Mashonaland West fans are yet to see top flight football.

Chaminuka has often complained that the team’s constant travels have had a negative impact on his unbeaten squad.

However, despite using an adopted stadium away from home, the debutantes have exceeded expectations.

They are still unbeaten in eleven matches and seating pretty on fourth position, just three points behind log leaders Hwange.

ZPC Kariba are on the road again this weekend, this time to Zvishavane where they will face off with Shabanie Mine.

Chaminuka stayed behind when his team travelled back to Kariba after the weekend match, and were at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday to watch Shabanie Mine in action against Caps United.
