The finals will be held in Victoria Falls at a date to be announced, organisers of the competition said.

Daphne Dube, who represented the school in the provincial competition, said she was hopeful that her school would land the national winners’ medal.

“I am very optimistic that we are going to bring the trophy home as we will be working as a team,” she said.

Competing schools for the provincial competition held at Nyameni High School in Marondera were drawn from all the nine districts in Mashonaland East province.

Each district was represented by one school that had won the district level edition of the competition.

Waddilove High School, which was dominated by female representatives, beat reigning champions Goromonzi High School.

Dube told NewsDay that her school’s victory was attributable to hard work and increased research.

“It is because of hard work and we have been doing research on issues related to HIV and Aids that made us to become the winners.”

The competition, which was in partnership with the National Aids Council (NAC) and Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, ran under the theme “Getting to zero my responsibility your responsibility”.

NAC provincial administrator for Mashonaland East Wilfred Dube expressed satisfaction with the students’ knowledge base.

“I am very happy that it has been a successful competition and the children had shown that they are indeed equipped with knowledge of HIV and related issues.

“Teachers should also be given due credit for ensuring that students get oriented in issues of HIV, Aids and life skills,” he said.

Tinotenda Kabai, Mashonaland East provincial facilitator for Young Peoples Network on Sexual Reproductive Health, HIV and Aids, urged the students to be fully equipped with knowledge about HIV and Aids.

Questions for the Mashonaland East competition were segmented into direct relations to HIV and Aids-related issues.

The students were asked questions about HIV and Aids prevention measures and how it was spread, among other questions.
