Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the accident happened when a Ford Transit vehicle which had no lights was involved in a head-on collision after encroaching onto the lane of oncoming Toyota Corolla vehicle which was heading to Concession.

Charamba was speaking when she led senior police officers in Harare’s central business district where they came face to face with the motoring public during an operation aimed at familiarising them with challenges encountered by junior traffic police.

During the operation, the senior officers arrested a kombi driver for driving without the requisite papers and driving in the opposite direction in a one-way street. His vehicle impounded.

The team, led by Charamba, patrolled the city to understand the reality on the ground on issues concerning operations of traffic police.

“We came from the Police General Headquarters to ensure that our officers on the ground are enforcing traffic rules and regulations,” Charamba said.

“We want to also see for ourselves because most of the times when these issues are raised, we are at headquarters, so we want to have a feel of what is happening on the ground.”

Charamba said they were also looking into corruption claims they had received and also interacting with the junior officers.

“There is also interaction with the junior officers so they understand that we are very serious in our messages with regard to dealing with corruption and the enforcements,” she said.

“But one clear test case we saw on our own was a kombi driver without the requisite papers, no documentation on his vehicle, he didn’t have a driver’s licence and he was driving against a one-way.”

Charamba said they had deployed more police officers on the roads as the holiday approaches.

She warned that vehicles without the requisite papers would be impounded.

Last year, police recorded 424 accidents countrywide over the Easter holidays.

Fifty people also lost their lives while 273 others were injured.
