LOCAL netball giants Nehanda Nyakasikana will be out to defend their Zimbabwe Netball Association (Zina) Super League title when the league resumes this weekend.

Twenty-two teams will battle it out for the title after Zina increased the number of teams from 20 to 22.

Nehanda take on Glow in their first match this season.

Two Southern Region teams Airforce and ZRP Midlands were promoted to the League in what Zina president Letitia Chipandu said was an effort to develop the sport in the region.

“The league is definitely starting this weekend and we have expanded the teams from 20 to 22. This year we promoted six teams instead of our traditional four,” Chipandu said.

She said they want to engage more provinces in the sport to develop it.

Bulawayo has only one team in the league Jumbo Queens while Khami Queens, Hwange Colliery and ZPC Hwange are also from the region. Now defunct Railstars are the only team from the region to have won the Super League consecutively.

Chipandu said as an organisation they were going to hold their annual general meeting on Saturday to discuss with the teams the fixtures.

“If you noticed this year our league runs into December. We are hoping that the games would have finished by the first week of December around the 6th, Chipandu said.

“We are going to hold an AGM at the weekend where we will discuss the fixtures with the teams. We are hoping that they will agree to play on Sundays as well as during the week.”

Khami will play ZPC Hwange while Corn Gold are at home to Jumbo Queens with Stanbic facing Airforce and Mutare Queens playing ZDF Queens. In other matches, Rhinos play Tenax, with Zimpost facing Shamva, while Waruwaru square off against Warthog, Beta Queens taking on Support Unit and Mamba Queens battling it out against Zesa Harare.
