St John’s College wins schoolboys Under-17 Basketball tourney

ST JOHN’S College from Harare won the Schools boys Under-17 basketball tournament after beating St Georges 32-21 in the final at Bulawayo Club for the Disabled (BCD) on Saturday.

The tournament saw 16 schools from different corners of the country taking part, but at the end of the day, it was two Harare sides who reached the final.

The champions beat Bulawayo side Petra 17-12 in the quarter-finals before getting one over Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) from the City of Kings 19-11 to book themselves a ticket to the final.

St George’s made their way to the final after beating Harare-based Heritage 14-12 in the quarter final and went on to beat Peterhouse of Mashonaland East 29-22.

On their way to the semi-finals, CBC beat Falcon 10-6, while other losing semi-finalists Peterhouse outclassed Lomagundi of Mashonaland West 15-7 in the quarter-final match.

Basketball Association of Zimbabwe (BUZ) technical and development president Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu said the games went well, though he was not pleased by the skill of the junior basketball players.
“The games went well, but the level of skill was not as expected,” Ndlovu said.

“Even St George’s, the losing finalists, did not have the quality we expected.

“From the games, I learnt that schools should invest in professional coaches because the performance is so pathetic that we are still far from developing the sport in the country.

“We also need to develop our officiating which still leaves a lot to be desired, especially in Bulawayo.”

  1. Why such low scoring games , is this for a basketball match really, I mean 15- 7 , are u serious! For the whole game . This is impossible

  2. And now we know what’s wrong with our sport in Zim. We make these kids play tournaments at courts designed for full grown adults, and then we sit back and say we have done a good job in development!!! 10-6 in a quarterfinal at this age is simply criminal

  3. just before I saw the receipt which had said $6924 , I be certain …that…my best friend woz truly erning money in their spare time on their apple laptop. . there mums best friend has done this 4 only nineteen months and at present repaid the loans on their home and bought a new BMW 5-series . this link,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, http://WWW.Works6.COM

  4. What happened to Prince Edward and Churchill. Since when did saints and johns become ball power houses????? have standards really dropped…. come on

    • The tournament wasn”t meant for Government schools coz each player had to pay 54 bucks for the tournament and they only informed about the tournament late.So how on earth would PE and Churu get the money from.Thats why the private schools dorminated the tournament.
