MUTARE town clerk Obert Muzawazi has urged feuding members of the Gimboki South Housing project to quickly resolve their differences

MUTARE town clerk Obert Muzawazi has urged feuding members of the Gimboki South Housing project to quickly resolve their differences, saying council might be forced to intervene and take over the project for the benefit of the 5 000 home-seekers registered under the scheme.

The parties are fighting over leadership of the scheme which is made up of seven organisations.

These are Mutare Private Companies (1 500 members), National Housing Development Trust (2 224), CMED (50), Zimbabwe Prison Services (107), Zimbabwe National Army (300), Mutare Housing Development Union (1500) and National Railways of Zimbabwe (135).

Last Saturday, members opposed to the current executive led by the losing Zanu PF Chikanga—Dangamvura parliamentary aspirant Mike Duru, convened a meeting and booted out the entire executive, accusing it of gross financial mismanagement.

The disgruntled members then elected a new executive led by David Marufu.

But the Duru-led executive vowed to stay put, saying they would not recognise their ouster.

On Saturday baton stick-wielding police were called to quell rising tempers as the two groups met in a bid to reconcile their differences.

Muzawazi said as the arbitrator, he would not allow for change of leadership of the consortium before an audit.

“When I gave them my arbitration award, I said all the books should be audited,” Muzawazi said.

“Those saying we are now in control are thieves, they are crooks. Elections are not done in the manner they were done on Saturday because they really failed to follow procedure.

“Who on earth is going to allow such madness? Elections will be held and there should be an audit report which states how finances were spent, not to confuse people like what happened.

“Therefore, that new committee is unofficial and those who misused funds should account for it,” said Muzawazi.

In his arbitration award last month, Muzawazi expressed dismay over the slow pace at which the land earmarked for the housing scheme was being developed.

He also alleged that there was gross mismanagement of funds by the Duru executive management. He called upon the beneficiaries to convene an annual general meeting to correct the issue and map the way forward.
