The matter is expected to be heard at the Rusape Magistrates’ Court on February 27 after it was postponed last Thursday to allow the local authority to file its response after the villagers filed an application to stop the evictions.

In an interview with NewsDay yesterday, Blessing Nyamaropa, from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights who is representing the families, said the planned evictions were a violation of human rights.

“There are 29 people who are directly cited in court papers and other 61 indirectly,” Nyamaropa said.

“They are said to have illegally settled themselves on Nemaire village which the MRDC claims is under its jurisdiction. We took up the matter and we are opposing the eviction on the basis that it will be a violation of their rights,” said Nyamaropa.

He added that it would be a serious violation of the victims’ rights especially during the rainy season as this would affect their livelihoods.
