FIVE senior Zanu PF Youth League members, including a central committee member in Bulawayo, have been caught up in a storm after they reportedly attended an end-of-year party for gays and lesbians at a city hotel.

NQOBILE BHEBHE

The party took place on December 21 on the outskirts of Bulawayo with the Zanu PF members joining the festivities soon after attending a last-minute preparatory meeting for the unveiling of the statue of the late Vice-President and veteran nationalist Joshua Nkomo.

President Robert Mugabe, who often takes potshots at homosexuals labelling them as worse than dogs and pigs for engaging in unnatural acts, was in the city the day after the party to officiate at the statue unveiling, commissioning of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo international airport terminal building opening and the street renaming in honour of Nkomo on Unity Day.

Sources in Zanu PF told Southern Eye that scores of youth league members were pushing for the suspension of those who attended the gay party. The issue was discussed at a tension-filled meeting in the city on Saturday, the sources said.

“Some members of the youth league, including a top executive member and someone at national level (names supplied), attended a gay party on December 21 at a venue owned by a former provincial member,” said a source.

“They went straight to the gay party soon after a meeting to prepare for the unveiling of Nkomo’s statue and official opening of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport.

“In Zanu PF sithiphansilezitabane (down with homosexuals) and President Mugabe always says no to that (homosexuality),” said the source.

The sources said they would up the heat on the case in the coming days.

The provincial structure is said to be under pressure from its districts to act on the matter promptly.

“The districts are planning a demonstration against the youth executive if no action is taken.”

Zanu PF Bulawayo spokesperson Michael Sikhosana would not comment on the issue yesterday saying he had not been in the city.

“I have not been in Bulawayo for a while so ask the provincial chairperson,” said Sikhosana.

Police arrested five members of the Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (Galz) during the party.

The five were donning T-shirts inscribed with the message “same love”. The T-shirts were also emblazoned with an image of the rainbow flag that is often used as a symbol of gay pride. Two of them reportedly suffered serious injuries during the arrest.

Last year, police arrested and detained 44 Galz members in Harare for unspecified charges. There were reports that several of them sustained serious injuries during the raids and they were detained without charge.

The government has been accused of targeting homes of gays and lesbians as well as singling out their families for harassment as it believes that homosexuals are a national embarrassment.

  1. a misleading headline, its just some individuals who attended. if one is caught stealing or raping and yet he is a zpf card carrying memeber, wpold you say zpf rapes. mashaya apa.

  2. I think people are taking the issues too far because what harm does it give the party if some father or relative attend a sons christmas party. Does it mean the parent is a gay? How many of us have been attending gatherings or funerals of either relatives who were thieves or ladies of the night who would have died. Why then do we not paint these who attend such gatherings with black paint since they are more like outcasts.
If a parent has a gay child and this child passes on do you not attend the funeral because one is a gay. In the same government, there are some who are rumoured to be homosexuals and what are people doing about that. Let those in government be removed first before steps are taken to discipline these ones.

    • Agreed. ZANU_PF have a bankrupt morality, and a bankrupt regime. So they target whites and gays to cover their sins of omission. They hope no-one will notice!

Gay people are a very small minority of our population. Most of them grow up to be useful citizens. There is no value at all in stigmatising them. It is just done to score cheap political points, and avoid the major issues, which are so much harder to deal with (corruption, lack of vision, inability to manage the economy in any real way).

  3. his stance on this homosexual perversion is laudable, for sho, they r worse than pigs n dogs.

Moses’s law waitoti takai namabwe zvakadai izvi, kutatadzisa mvura kunaya …nxa

    • Like you don’t sleep with your neighbours wife, and commit adultery which is also found in moses law, please don’t be foolish

    • Moses’ Law may be your preferred yard-stick, but Christians replaced the Old Testament with the New centuries ago.

And whatever your religious belief, you have no right to impose that on anyone else, it’s a private thing.

  4. Those defending gays are most probably gays and lesbians themselves. Dont hide behind the finger of a party as an excuse. There are so many of you in that political party

  5. Jus let them be what is your problem??
Where exactly does it affect you that they have different sexual orientations??
This is not stuff that you should be busy with
People are suffering out there, there is no money, no education for some, no employment and a financial crisis is headed towards our way and these officials are busy bothering themselves about gays, please give them a break and focus on developing this country

    • iwe huan rights activist ndo chii ichochi. The very fact that gay rights wasnt something of zimbabwe’s minds is the very reason why we dont want them. We cant just adopt something, especially when someone actually tells you to do likewise.

  6. The very fact that zimbabweans still fear the topic of diverse sexuality is a shame. But what can we expect from a nation that cant even stand up for the simplest of basic rights such as water and electricity, healthcare, employment.Kuswera muchiimba nhora ndokunokunetsai…In south africa the government doesnt dabble in what two people choose to do in the privacy of their bedrooms.Yet look how south flourishes..Yatiraramisa.Pane akatadziswa kujamba boarder nokuti kune magay ku south?
How i pray for the day my african brothers bbecome more educated and less shallow minded…

    • The truth shall set you free. We should stand for the truth come Nebuchadnezzar or fire, come paradise. We shouldn’t worship a god because of ‘a morsel of food’ 2 seconds. Life is a principle! Hebrews 12:16 – says – Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

We shouldn’t change principle enticed by a sinning brother.

      • Try moving on from the Old to the New Testament, as you should, if you are a Christian.

Then read the parable of the Good Samaritan; and the story of the woman at the well. Or try the Beatitudes.

    • SA’s prosperity does not entice us to change our stance my brother.

Jeremiah 12:1 – You are always righteous, Lord,
when I bring a case before you.
Yet I would speak with you about your justice:
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why do all the faithless live at ease?

The ways is easy for the weeked mkoma.

Ecclesiastes 1:9 – What has been will be again,
      what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

What you say has been said of evil before.

2 Corinthians 5:19 – that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

Now you have to partake of no man’s sin, repent, and be baptized in Jesus Christ if you have not done so before.

Jesus came kuti titi build together and you are to join in if you haven’t already mkoma.

      Good day!

  7. Let us pray for those who are not yet born again for we ourselves hatizivi who prayed for us kuti titendeuke.

I greet you all in the name of Jesus Christ Of Nazareth!

    God bless you all!

  8. I dont see how it affects any1 or the nation at large if 1 is gay, their sexuality nd orientation is their private lives and what they do in their bedrooms remains there and i dont see how it affects the ability to be proffesional or be part of any political party.Gay people are Human 1st before their sexuality therefore they should posses evry human right evry “normal” human being does….

    • Rwanda’s government has already made this its official stance. That government is also getting on with building their country into a modern state, investing and building for the future.

Pity our government decided to follow the Stone Age approach instead…

  9. Nekuti judgement yaMwari inononoka kuuya, ska vanhu vakuita zvisakarurama madiro – the bible says so.

Tendeukai hama. Soddom and Gomorrah were destroyed for many sins, including homosexuality

If homosexuality were right, why were those people made blind by God’s angels when they denied Lot’s vigins craving for the angels in man’s form?

Pafungei hama tisiye zvakaipa Zimbabwe ikomborerwe nekuda kwemabasa akanaka
