Stanley Nyoni (31) who is stationed at Harare Central Police Station and his commuter omnibus-operator friend, Prudence Mupandawana (35), allegedly teamed up to assault a Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services officer Oliver Kabayandoro (36).

The two denied the murder charge before Chitungwiza Magistrate Lazarus Murendo.

It is the State’s case that on December 23 last year at around 11:30pm at Club 420 at Makoni shopping centre, a dispute arose between Kabayandoro and Nyoni while they were drinking.

Trouble started when some patrons who were playing pool started arguing and Kabayandoro, a former tenant of Nyoni intervened during the fight leading to Nyoni and Mupandawana confronting him.

Allegations are that the duo demanded an explanation from Kabayandoro as to why he stopped the patrons from fighting. The court heard that this degenerated into a misunderstanding leading the pair to assault the defenceless Kabayandoro with punches.

Mupandawana allegedly grabbed Kabayandoro and stabbed him with a knife in the chest.

Kabayandoro tried in vain to grab Nyoni, but was overpowered and the pair took to their heels. Kabayandoro reportedly lost consciousness and was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the pair’s arrest. They were remanded in custody to January 31 for trial. Tendai Mukariri prosecuted.
