IT was a hive of activity yesterday in Harare as parents made last-minute preparations for their children ahead of schools opening today.

Long-winding queues were also the order of the day outside several banks as parents and guardians paid school fees for their children.
Some shops in the capital city had to reinforce security, forcing shoppers to queue outside to reduce overcrowding inside their retail outlets.
A manager at a local shop that sells uniforms who preferred to remain anonymous said business was at its peak.
“The opening of schools has provided brisk business for us especially on uniforms and other school-related materials,” he said.
Bernard Ncube, a vendor along Leopold Takawira Street shared similar sentiments.
“As from last week, we have been recording better sales through selling school attires. Big retailers are charging more, hence parents opt to purchase them from us,” he said

Memory Katumba of Glenview, who was at Mohamed Mussa buying uniforms for her daughter, applauded the use of multiple currencies.
“The United States currency has brought fundamental changes, improving the situation as compared to previous years like 2008 when one had to buy groceries and store them at home before the opening of the schools. As for now, we can do the shopping on the same day as the children leave for school,” she said.
