The proposed friendly against Libya had been scheduled to take place in Tripoli on Friday.

However, Zifa announced yesterday that the match had been cancelled. “I can confirm that the friendly match against Libya has been cancelled. The Warriors will now play Gabon early January,” said the association’s communications manager Xolisani Gwesela.

Warriors coach Ian Gorowa had initially raised concern over the proposed friendly against Libya. He said he preferred to go into camp with his charges after the friendly against Mozambique in preparation for the Chan tournament than fly out to Tripoli.

Yesterday, Gorowa was engaged in meetings with the Zifa leadership yesterday to map the way forward in terms of their preparations for the African Nations Championships (Chan) finals.

The Warriors defeated Mozambique 2-1 in an international friendly match at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday and they are now expected to face off Gabon in another international friendly match set for January 7 before they kick off their 2014 Chan tournament.

Zimbabwe, who are making their third successive appearance at the tourney are one of four seeded teams at the Chan tournament. They are in Group B which also has Uganda, Burkina Faso and Morocco.

Gorowa’s men qualified for the biennial tournament reserved for home-based players only at its inauguration in Ivory Coast before securing another berth at the last edition in Sudan.

However, Zimbabwe has not managed to go beyond the group stages of the competition since their maiden appearance in Ivory Coast under Sunday Chidzambwa.

Gorowa who guided the Warriors to the third edition of the continental soccer show piece will be hoping to lift the title.

The coach is expected to announce his provisional 25-men squad which will be trimmed to 23 players before the tournament kicks off.
