AN unidentified man was yesterday trampled to death by a lone bull elephant in Mvurwi as villagers tried to drive it off by shouting and pelting it with stones, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has said.

Zimparks spokesperson Caroline Washaya-Moyo in a statement said the incident occurred at Forester E Resettlement Area early yesterday. “A lone bull elephant was sighted in Forester E Resettlement area in Mvurwi. Investigations reveal that members in the community started harassing the elephant by making noise and throwing stones at it. This irritated the elephant, leading to one of the villagers being trampled to death,” she said.

Washaya-Moyo said after the incident the elephant retreated to the Mavuradonha wilderness area.

“We are, however, appealing to communities in Guruve, Centenary and Mvurwi not to travel at night and respect the distance between themselves and wildlife,” she said.
