In a statement over the weekend, town clerk Tendai Mahachi said water consumption normally reached its peak between September and November.

“The City of Harare wishes to advise its valued residents and those in surrounding areas that the peak period for water demand is upon us,” Mahachi said.

“During the September to November period, demand for water increases because of high temperatures which force people to use more water: bathing; drinking and; irrigating gardens and lawns. High temperatures also cause evaporation from our water sources, affecting water levels.

“To ensure equitable water distribution, the city advises that it will intensify its water demand management programme.”

The local authority secured a $144 million loan from China for rehabilitation and expansion of its water treatment plants, with analysts saying the city was likely to continue facing serious water challenges until the proposed Kunzvi and Musami dams projects had been constructed.
