FIVE former Harare mayors yesterday met the incumbent Bernard Manyenyeni and pledged to assist him in the discharge of his duties.

REPORT BY MOSES MATENGA

The mayor and his predecessors, among them Harare’s first black mayor Tizirai Gwata, Oliver Chidawu, Alderman Jabulani Thembani, Elias Mudzuri and Muchadeyi Masunda, met at a local hotel where they offered to come up with a platform to regularly advise Manyenyeni.

“Harare has improved since my days as mayor in the early 80s. This (meeting) should come regularly and become a tradition so that we continue sharing ideas on how to run the city,” said Chidawu.

Alderman Tembani said: “This is the first time this has happened. We will assist you (Manyenyeni) in any way possible with our experience.”

Mudzuri, who was fired by Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo in 2002, said that the tradition of meeting former mayors to share ideas should be maintained and proposed the setting-up of the former mayors’ platform to interact and share ideas.

Masunda said Manyenyeni could tap into the experience of former mayors.

He urged the incumbent mayor and his team to continue with community development projects.
