The celebrations, which are commemorated annually on October 5, will be held under the theme A Call for Teachers. The commemorations, organised by the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) in Harare, will include sporting activities such as soccer and netball games where different teams made up of teachers will compete for honours.

Zimta president Richard Gundane said: “This year’s theme seeks to call for attention on the teacher, who is responsible and accountable for the provision of quality public education, which is a crucial element to Zimbabwean society.”

Gundane said quality public education should never be compromised through the recruitment of unqualified teachers in public schools, lack of teaching materials, poor salaries and working conditions.

“As this year’s theme suggests, teachers need to unite for the deliverance of quality education in public schools, where the majority of the population is. Quality teaching, quality tools for teaching and quality environments must be availed to teachers so that they deliver their best.

“As teachers take time to celebrate each other and their work, they will also use the opportunity to engage in exciting activities such as ball-kicking and dance,” said Gundane.

World Teachers’ Day originated from a joint signing of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation and the International Labour Organisation recommendations concerning the status of teachers on October 5, 1966 and 1997 recommendations.

These recommendations formed the base line standards for measuring the status of teachers. The day also celebrates awareness and appreciation for the vital contributions that teachers make to education and development.
