A 22-year-old Wedza man who last month raped a 73-year-old woman from his neighbourhood was on Wednesday slapped with a 15-year jail term after he pleaded guilty to the rape charge when he appeared before Marondera magistrate Clever Tsikwa.

REPORT BY JAIROS SAUNYAMA

However, the rapist, who can not be named to protect the victim’s identity, will serve an effective 12-year jail term after three years were set aside on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on August 1 this year, the rapist from Chief Ruzane’s area forced his way into the woman’s bedroom and demanded to have sex with her.

The complainant, who then had switched on her torch and positively recognised her assailant resisted the move, but was overpowered and eventually raped.

Soon after the act, the man fled the scene, but was arrested the following day after the matter was reported to the police.
