Tsvangirai in danger

Morgan Tsvangirai

Former Prime Minister’s Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC-T party could be headed for an implosion following sensational claims yesterday that there are officials in the party that have a grand plan to kick Tsvangirai from the helm of the party.

Staff Reporters

The plotters, according to Obert Gutu, a senior MDC-T official, have been working towards this goal well before the elections and could have played a part in the party’s dismal electoral performance.

In a no-holds-barred tirade against Tsvangirai’s alleged enemies, Gutu declared a “gloves-off” all-out war with them, threatening to expose them and warning them “enough is enough”.

Gutu claimed on his Facebook wall that the group — comprising of people that “think they are very intelligent” — had been holding meetings “nicodemously at a dingy lodge in the Avenues area” where the plot to ensure Tsvangirai did not get to State House was hatched and developed.

Gutu, the former Justice deputy minister in the inclusive government, said on his page that power-hungry MDC-T officials were masterminding the unceremonial and unconstitutional removal of Tsvangirai.

Tsvangirai has steered the MDC-T ship since the party’s formation in 1999 and has lost to President Robert Mugabe three times in elections that he has claimed to have been stolen.

The 2008 election was rejected by the international community forcing Mugabe to accept to work together with Tsvangirai in a negotiated coalition government.

In a strong-worded message posted on his Facebook wall, Gutu said: “ . . . these shrill sounds from some sickly fake democrats calling for his (Tsvangirai) unconstitutional removal from office simply won’t cut.”

Gutu labelled those calling for the removal of Tsvangirai as “fake democrats (clothed) in sheep skin”. The MDC-T Harare provincial spokesperson, who acted as Tsvangirai’s chief election agent in the July 31 harmonised elections, following the incarceration of Morgen Komichi, described party members pushing for Tsvangirai’s resignation as “fake cadres and turncoat democrats”.

“Publicly, they lampoon and lambast how July 31 was stolen, but we know that deep down their hearts, they never wanted Morgan to get to State House. They hold meetings, nicodemously, at some dingy lodge in the Avenues and some other such places where they scheme and plot.

“They cannot be trusted. They never mean what they say nor say what they mean. They speak in forked tongues. They are rabidly power-hungry. Enough is enough. The gloves are off. We will match them pound for pound. They might think they are intelligent, but, of course, some of us are smarter and more intelligent than them. We will expose them for what they really are.”

Contacted for comment yesterday, MDC-T national spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora said: “We are not aware of the plot (to unseat Tsvangirai). We are not aware of those meetings (being held nicodemously at dingy lodges in the Avenues). The standing committee, the national council and the national council decided that all issues relating to leadership must be dealt with in terms of the party’s constitution, which means at the next congress of the party.”

Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka also declined to comment saying: “Mr Tsvangirai has no comment to make on that. Mwonzora should be able to comment on that. He is able to give the party’s position on that.”

Nelson Chamisa, the party’s national organising secretary, said: “Please talk to Mwonzora about that. He is the party’s spokesperson and he is able to talk about that. I only comment when it’s absolutely necessary.”

Tendai Biti, the secretary-general of the MDC-T, declined to comment on the matter, referring questions to Mwonzora as well. NewsDay called Gutu asking him to elaborate on some of his claims, but the lawyer said he did not wish to go into further detail.

“No, I am not going to talk about that now. I am not going to discuss that,” Gutu said.

On Monday, some MDC-T councillors in Kwekwe, Redcliff, Mutare and Victoria Falls took a move that shook the party when they voted for Zanu PF candidates in elections to select mayors, deputies and chairpersons of local authorities.

The apparent revolt by the party councillors, who had explicit directives to vote in a certain manner, was described by Mwonzora as “a very strange development”.

Analysts yesterday said the development indicated that the party was in turmoil.

“It’s problematic. It creates problems and exposes leadership problems. It’s a threat to the stability of the party though it (the party) has indicated that it would discipline those who did so,” said political analyst Ernest Mudzengi.

Another political analyst, Charity Manyeruke, said: “At the moment MDC-T is still in a state of confusion. It might lead to their downfall if they are not careful. It indicates serious problems which could lead to the party disintegrating.”

Manyeruke, however, believed the MDC-T councillors’ defiance signalled a paradigm shift saying they opted to settle for worthy candidates and refused to follow the party’s whipping system.

“It shows us that in council they are looking at leadership qualities, which is what we need as a country,” said Manyeruke.

Political analyst Ibbo Mandaza said: “It happens across political party lines. Local issues happen to be above politics. People look for a candidate who can tackle issues best such as service delivery. I know many cases where Zanu PF voted for MDC-T.”

  1. We hav MDC T, MDC N,MDC M,MDC 99,if they cant handle this properly we are going to hav yet another faction,Tsvangison must just give button to another person peacefull and they will survive this.

    • The other day it was Bennett using facebook to incite violence and division. Grown men having tweefs and cat fights on social media like teenage girls? Seriously? These bed-wetters can not lead. All along they tell us that factionalism has all but destroyed ZANU PF.

    • People who r planning to ouster Tsvangirayi are Lovemore Moyo,Dorcas Sibanda and A standing committe member the mentioned people have been doing private meetings

  2. What is the MDC-T’s position on sanctions against ZanuPF? Biti, Mangoma, Tsvangirai himself have been calling for the lifting of sanctions against ZanuPF since the formation of the GNU when they were sucking up to ZanuPF for offering them cabinet posts. Is that still their position? Are Mangoma and Priscilla Mushonga going to continue to engage the EU to lift sancations against ZanuPF in view of the stolen elections?
And does Tsvangirai think those in the diaspora should come back because he was saying all along the situation has changed?

  3. Tsvangirai is worse than useless. A waste of space – they should have got rid of him way back in 2008 when he urged others to give in to ZanuPF and join a coalition with ZanuPF. Tsvangirai has done absolutely nothing for the last 14 years. He has inadvertently given a modicum of legitimacy to ZanuPF.

  4. paipa apa, mdc-t needs to be careful, i foresee a realignment of politics in zimbabwe especially with the noise about madhuku wanting to for a party

  5. Mwonzora, Biti, Gutu and the rest of them MDC Tahiti lawyers are proof enough that the law department at UZ is not doing a good job. They just talk without first understanding the issues at hand. A good example is their idiotic celebration of some fake victory in Maputo. Trained and practising lawyers failed to understand a simple SADC communique. The puppet party deserves to be extinct.

  6. Make all the noise you want and have all sorts of imaginations or wishes….the truth remains…MORGAN IS A BRAND AS SUCH MDC T IS MORGAN AND MORGAN IS MDC T OR SIMPLY PUT…MORGAN IS THE PEOPLE AND THE PEOPLE IS ZIMBABWE AND ZIMBABWE IS MORGAN…..no amount of imaginations or machinations will change this scenario

    • Unonyepa iwe. Which people are u talking about? Morgan doesn’t own the MDC. Neither does he represent (let alone own) the pple. Can’t you see that he is now a spent force. He did his part and reached his plateau in 2008 when he beat RGM hands/pants down but instead of getting better thereafter he got worse and is not showing any signs of improving in the short to medium term. NGAAENDE, there are no sacred cows in a democratic set-up.

    • @musharukwa, u are a day dreamer, a walking grave like MoGay!!!!!!!! How can you say MaGay is Zimbabwe? We are not gays and we are our own bosses not MoGay who needs a western handler to teach him whatever he must do given a chance to rule as pointed out by Dell.

  7. This development is good. MORGAN MUST GO since he has become a liability to the party with his bleeps and blunders. I wonder if he is not ZPF too. Internal change is long overdue in both MDC and ZPF but I think its moreso in ZPF coz RGM has become a big liability to the whole country. A Morganless MDC will certainly own ZPF come the next elections (Nikuv or no Nikuv). Ncube, Madhuku and Dabengwa will remain as irrelevant as Kisinoti (Kiss Not?) Mukwazhi and Egypt Dzinemunhenzva while MDC (not Gukurahundi’s so called green machine) machine rises again.Watch this space. CHINJAI leadership.

  8. MDC T, IF THEY DOES THAT,THAT WILL BE THE MARK OF THE COBRA FOR THEM,CIO USE PPLE AND DUMP THEM,INFACT IT WILL BE A MOMENT OF DESTRUCTION CONTINUEING TIME(MDC T).STOP PIN POINTING EACH OTHER WHEN THERE IS A DEMISE,BECOZ U CAN GIVE WICTHES VACANCIES TO WITCH U.BITI & CHAMISA PROVE YO INTELLECTUALS BY NOT MISJUDGING YO ACTUAL HIEGHT WITH YO SHADOW.LEAVE ON IMAGINING ,DON”T SIZE.U ALL HAVE BLUNDERS BUT THEY A BEING MASKED BY THAT GUY BECOZ HE IS THE TARGETED FRONTIER.SAVE MAY BREAK WITH A MAJESTIC PROPORTION SIMPLY BECOZ HE IS KNOWN AND IS A CROWD PULLA,AS SUPPORTERS WE CAN SEE EITHER TO FOLLOW SAVE OR IGNORE MDCs FOR GOOD,BECOZ THAT SPECULATING NOTION THAT THE PARTY IS SHILLY SHULLING THE LADDER OF PLEASURE WILL HAVE COME TOUCHBALISED.LISTEN FROM CHIPANGA (NYOKA KUBATWA MURIVA USATI YAFA) U WERE DINNING WITH PRICLES GUYS AND FORGOTTEN THE ENCOUNTERINGS FROM THE LONG MARCH U MADE.IN ZANU WE KNOW RG M,THEN MDC SAVE. 9. Tsvangirai and ur fellows u r blind and u can not see mavara eshato, thats party infiltration by the Cten. What made MDC always a shaky party is bcoz Bob hits u from within. Iyi ndiyo kunonzi kurohwa pahome, nuetral and away! Pahome- within the party, Nuetral-SADC, away-elections!!!!! Can’t u c the Ncube faction was bcoz of infiltration and they had to call Zanu Pf guy Mutambara to lead them, Locadia Karimatsenga issue was a setup by the Intelligence crooks,Baba Jukwa, the so called Nikuv…..can’t u see??? The MDC party constitution inoswera yakagarirwa pasi nema Cten looking for loopholes of which some them u overlook as a party. We want change in Zimbabwe but not by Tsvangirai, a worse than Mugabe dictator. now arikufamba muma provinces to cover up his dismal failure for them 2 vote him in as e party president. Vanhu mukai Tsvangirai akatambisa support yenyu why wud he allow rigging right in his face??? now he goes arnd saying i know what happened, where were u n what were u doing when it happened??? Power hungry,,,,,Too dumb but emotional with a weakness in the Degree of Marokwe uye Maruvaenyika. MDC’s FAILURE IS GREEDY imagine pa GNU maofficials had to make e zim situation appealing to the whole world nekuti vakangavaradzwa nemari mumukanwa!!!!! Zanu will strip u off of ur pride………….Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all things will be added unto you Mth 6v33!!!

  10. I think we made a blunder of using a T at the end of our party name. Some of us think individuals are greater than the party. Hell NO, how many times should we entertain excuses as a party? Elections have be stolen since 2000 and what are we doing about this? It seem we have accepted that, the elections should be stolen, if so then why do we compete in elections we know will be stolen. If there are no answers then why do we keep the same guys to tell us the same story?

My feeling is that its either we dumb, crazy or weird. When will we wake up, or migrate from the hibernation phase?

  11. Obert Gutu is making a fool of himself. It’s time for introspection. Clearly, and with all due respect Mr Tsvangirai needs to step aside for a more politically astute member. ZANU PF took advantage of Tsvangirai’s naivety and consolidated their position in the GNU. Tsvangirai was always telling those who cared to listen that Mugabe was such a nice fellow who was ill-advised by securocrats. What nonsense. Promiscuous ZANU PF women were thrown in Morgan’s way and he was foolish enough to fall for the bait. Morgan sheepishly led the electorate into one of the most unfree and unfair elections in the history of elections. It’s time for Uncle Morgan to go into retirement and let more capable hands take over. We cannot be ZANU PF doormats forever.

  12. Question?: What’s Obert Gutu’s primary motive in going public with this story other than to shift blame. There is no plot and there was never a plot. Now that MDC can’t make the ZANU rigging story stick they are trying to swing sway to a more acrimonious clandestine group within the party. Public buys they story they sympathize with Tsvangirai, hence another shoot in 2016 for the party leadership.

Clever, seems people are learning from these publicity stunts: witches crush landing; a Tino-porn-a Katsande; crocodile under the bed gimmick.

    • Obert Gutu’s primary motive was to show everyone that he has a facebook page, he thinks it’s cool to be on facebook and have many facebook friends! It could also be a publicity ‘stint’ kikikikikikiki!

  13. guys you are wasting your time muchikonzera even bigger cracks within the mdc party this is the same thing led to the victory of zanu pf twuma divisions within the party the problem is munemakaro hamuna zvido zvemusangano pamwoyo kana vanhu vachakuvhoterai stop this nonsence for your own infoemation if you remove tsvangirai from that part the party will be dead ask welshmen ncube na mutambara dzungu haribhadhare

  14. ladies and gentleman.beware the tides of Zanuism.Tsvangirai did his party and failed.then the simple thing is that HE MUST GO.period. chihandiendi ndochatirikurambaka chadai kutiendesa kumawere.

  15. Look gentlemen, the young man is trying to show his gratitude to boss T. for having demanded that he be made mayor for the greater Harare. Alas, we all know what happened.
Really, who would not want to suck to their boss if he was appointed a blue eyed boy.
But I would like to advise the lawyer that there are no permanent positions in a democracy, meaning no one is indispensable.
Change is good my friend and why are you being allergic to change?
You don’t expect us to celebrate George Shaya’s inclusion at his familiar no. 8 position in our warriors today, do you, mr. Gutu? Forgive my knowledge of football, I don’t know what position Shaya played.
This system of impositions has far reaching implications for who ever will be the architects of such a move. Its not surprising what happened to towns such as Gweru, Kwekwe etc etc

    • George indeed alternated between wearing jersey number 7 and 8..so yah you are right! In those days he played as a striking linkman, so again you are right! After making a nuisance of themselves with imposing elections with their poorly explained confirmations..they are at it again..so when are they going to OPENLY practice the democracy they preach? What is going on here? I say to the MDC let this councillor affair ride and go back to the bigger picture..stop being sidetracked by trivia.

  16. “Rigging or no rigging MDCT will win” said the ignorant Tswangirai. Now u are crying foul previously said u would win under under whatever circumstances

  17. Gutu watsamwira humayor hwakapunyuka mumaoko, zvave zvenzara izvi!
You must start talking to Matinenga (hats off to him) for a job in his Law Practice. Gutu vanaMatinenga ndivo vanhu vanonzi vari intelligent when you look at his move kusiya politics, it was after an honest analysis haikona zvenyu zvedondo izvi. Njere hanzipopegwi w!

Nelson Chamisa, the party’s national organising secretary, said: “Please talk to Mwonzora about that. He is the party’s spokesperson and he is able to talk about that. I only comment when it’s absolutely necessary.” meaning its below his position as OS to comment. You never even commented on your inability to organise and rally the party – handisati ndamboona wezhira akapusa sewe Nelson.

  18. It would seem a lot of coments on this forum are from people who are not members and would be happy to see the demise of the MDC. People who are and have always hated competition. Tsvangirai was elected by a party congress in 2011 to lead the party till 2016 when another congress will be held. So it is only people who are in MDC structures and who are accredited to attend these congresses who can decide the future of the party,s leadership. We know a lot of people would celebrate if Tsvangirai were to be removed from the helm of the MDC because he is the only opposition leader since independence to have jolted the establisment. Tsvangirai haabviswe pachigaro nemapepanhau kana ma commentators asi kuti nevatsigiri ve MDC, ‘ Full stop’. As for Gutu, I would advise the young man to go back to his law practice instead of causing unnecessary confusion. MDC yakauya zvamuchose, one can only delay change but you can never ever stop it.

  19. all are day dreams. mdc will be in government by end of 2014, mark my words. I c a cyclone which is cuming in the cuming days to help Zimbabweans from being colonized by china. nehanda and kaguvi are complaing in their graves about china. tsvangirai is going to be the president of Zimbabwe next year constitutionally.

  20. Vote of non-confidence can be applied even before 2016.That s free democracy.
This guy tshanboy is not a fit leader.
In zanu pf you can smell good leaderships from low level to Commander in Chief.

  21. @CIO/Cten baba mabaya dede nemumukanwa kuti tyo!!! If Tsvangirai was hit in front of Biti and Chamisa what r they going to do different. Its just a split iri kunhuwirira apa. Mira zvako uone maiwe vakafa havana chavakaona!!!!Huya uzowona….MDC is in shambles. ko yaigo tumidzwa kunziMDC-tsvangirai seiko? Instead why wud two parties be recognised under on name, thats how votes and focus is split!!!

  22. Not surprising, however Mwonzora never seems to know much or anything for that matter how is he running his party office i wonder

  23. is this true boys? i mean are you saying some of your party are so immature they cannot handle not winning ? asi hamuna kumboona mutambo we basketball ?
now look vakomana, amongst yourselves there aint any leadership material since muchiri zvigondora. and a word of caution garayi makarangarira kuti misangano inoitwa nerweseri mumhuri hayina izvo inoshanda.
imagining there is yet a morgen among you is perhaps expecting the sun to change rising in the mabvazuva robuda kumavirira. unity is not only beneficial to your party but the country too. check and balance this !!

  24. We will support Morgan Tsvangirai’s leadership till true democracy comes to Zimbabwe. Those who want MDC T leadership change were planted in the party by zanupf. They do not know difference between rigging and winning an election. They wanted Morgan to also compete in rigging game.Leave us alone and form your own party.

  25. i remember wise counsel given you either by SIR above or The Psycho that yours cannot be a party of excellence since muchikundwa ngano dzinonakidza na HE. I agree kuti forget about elevated positions at this time boys just use the opportunity to fine tune your strong points nekuti even your adversaries across the road are involved in fistfights too at juvenile levels. pull together even when going gets tough for it is the small leak that can sink a great ship.

  26. Ko Biti arikunzwa sei mazuva ano, hanzi aive nechikosoro.

Seriously guys its no longer funny Tsvangirai ndibaba wevamwe vanhu, ndisekuru wevamwe vanhu, ndileader wevanhu vashoma pane vaMugabe, murume wevakadzi hobho and we should give him respect.

Starting with newsday, why do you always choose the photo when Tsvangirayi is at his ugliest. Mune agenda imi.

Asi iwe Tsvangirayi dai wakabvuma kukundwa you would be a hero in the eyes of many. Zvino you are always putting yourself in a position where you have to capitulate inindava. He ndini ndine makey , he ndini ndine yese. Ipi yacho.

Chaona people have moved on Macouncillors ako akakurasisa, Mwonzora the fake laywer anzwa nekukuruzisa macourt battle, three by elections makarohwa. Your western handlers attended parliament opening and sang praises for Gushungo. EU has lifted sanctions on ZMDC.

Baba vangu iwe bonga praise makes good men better and in your case bad men worse. 27. Shut up vanhu veZANU. Tsvangirai will remain the MDC Presidential cantidate, nomatter how you buck & puff. Only ZANOIDS want leadership change in MDCT but real MDC-T structures will endorse Morgan Tsangirai.

  28. @ musharukwa wre r u fm? indawa uchida kudzikisira rudzi rwedu? we since moved on and dumped tsvangirai, bt u continue to sing praisese to that idiot. what has he to offer? anemusi waaka kupa kana coke/fanta pa rally dzake?? uchati swededza kure namwari mhani -kumh***ta kwa mai vako. chupeti yemunhu zidofo raka gomarara pfungwa.
