The executive held a two-day post-election strategic planning meeting which ended yesterday to review the implications of its electoral defeat and to chart the way forward.

MDC-T spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora told NewsDay: “The national executive reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of party president Morgan Tsvangirai contrary to reports in some sections of media which suggested otherwise.”

The high-profile post-election meeting held in Harare was in response to recent political developments, including the subtle endorsement of the election outcome by Sadc leaders.

Mwonzora said the party had also received reports of how the harmonised elections were allegedly stolen.

“The executive received a chilling account of how the election was rigged and prepared a comprehensive response thereto which it will roll out.”

Quizzed on what the party would do about it, Mwonzora was not forthcoming although the party is on record as saying it would pursue diplomatic and political means to resolve the matter.

Tsvangirai has been at the helm of the MDC-T since its formation in 1999 and has lost to Mugabe in presidential contests three times.

In the latest round, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) declared Mugabe the winner with 61% against Tsvangirai’s 34%.

Tsvangirai petitioned the Constitutional Court demanding nullification of the results, but later withdrew the petition after Zec declined to release voting material which he needed to substantiate his rigging claims.
