WARRIORS striker Nyasha Mushekwi grabbed the headlines in Belgium this weekend as he scored his first goal for KV Oostende as they came from behind to draw 1-1 against Zulte-Waregem in the Jupiler League.

While the former Caps United and Mamelodi Sundowns man had scored during his trials, the weekend goal was seen as a perfect starting point to his career in Europe after a protracted move from South Africa.

The draw did not help his side though, as they remained in 15th place with just two points from five matches.

Mushekwi’s agent Ralph Nkomo told KickOff.com that he had been called by the club’s president to express his delight at Mushekwi’s performance.

“Nyasha scored the equaliser in the match which was played at their home ground. Immediately after the game, the president of KV Oostende called me to convey the news,” Nkomo said.

“As his agent I am relieved because this is a good start to his career in Europe. They were playing against a team that is in the Champions League and it is good for him to make such an impact.”

Worse off in the same league is former Warriors midfielder Vusa Nyoni who featured for 59 minutes as his side Mons went down 2-0 to leaders Standard Liege to remain at the bottom of the 16-team table , with one point.

There is no doubt about Costa Nhamoinesu’s rising star. The former Masvingo and AmaZulu man made another full appearance as Sparta Prague mauled Pizbram 4-0 on Friday night to remain second in the Czech Liga.

Sparta have 16 points from six matches, the same as leaders Viktoria Plzen.

Quincy Antipas also played the entire match, but Brondby could only manage a 0-0 draw against Randers to remain stuck in bottom place in the Danish top-flight.

In South Africa, former Warriors and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha endured a nightmarish afternoon for Bidvest Wits as they were hammered 4-2 by Platinum Stars in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final.

Despite having taken the lead through Ryan Chapman, Wits conceded three goals in 10 minutes and Nengomasha was to blame for the third.

The veteran midfielder attempted to clear the ball inside his box, but fell, leaving Thabani Mthembu to slot home and was eventually substituted.

There was no action for other Zimbabweans at Wits — Thomas Sweswe, who is still awaiting his residence permit and Benjani Mwaruwari and Denver Mukamba.

On Saturday, Willard Katsande and Knowledge Musona were part of the Kaizer Chiefs side that lost 1-0 to Orlando Pirates in the first leg of another semi-final of the MTN8 at a packed Soccer City. The second legs will be played on September 24.

Musona survived a caution in the second half when his elbow caught Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi although 1998 World Cup final assistant referee Achmat Salie believes he (Musona) should have been sent off.

League action returns tonight in South Africa with AmaZulu, featuring Carlington Nyadombo, taking on the Method Mwanjali-captained Mpumalanga Black Aces. Chiefs face Moroka Swallows.

Tomorrow, Khama Billiat is expected to be handed his debut when Mamelodi Sundowns host Platinum Stars while Wits have a date with Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Billiat recently completed his move from Ajax Cape Town and will team up with Cuthbert Malajila and Esrom Nyandoro for the Brazilians.

Another Zimbabwean at Sundowns, Lionel Mtizwa is likely to be sent back on loan to Pretoria University.

Terrence Mandaza is also expected to be in the starting line-up for Maritzburg United against Free State Stars, while Washington Arubi’s Pretoria University takes on SuperSport United. Rodreck Mutuma’s Bloemfontein Celtic travel to Polokwane City for the second league match of the season tomorrow.
