The debit cards would include EMV technology making them difficult to counterfeit.

Speaking at the launch in Harare on Friday, Metbank managing director Belmont Ndebele said the MasterCard products would be offered fewer than three classes Gold, Business and Classic.

“We take pride in bringing real value to cardholders by ushering in a fresh way of secure card payments which is competitive not just in Africa, but the world,” said Ndebele.

He said the three products could be used for e-commerce payments online and at any MasterCard accepting automated teller machine and point of sale machine in the world.

Ndebele said the cards were an answer to need as people conduct business in locally and abroad.

He said Metbank being the first bank to introduce the Chip Debit MasterCard in Zimbabwe, continues to work on the forefront of technology to introduce new, easier and more secure payment products for all stakeholders.

Metbank executive director Sibusisiwe Ndlovu said the launch of the MasterCard was in inline with the company’s goal to harness technology in creating products that bring superior value and convenience to customers.

“Gone are the days when you had to put up with structured banking hours. Today (Friday) banking clients are comfortable with the digital world. Bank is no longer limited to geographical boundaries, neither is it limited to banking hours,” said Ndlovu.

She said the modern banking client was comfortable in doing banking from virtually anywhere in the world at any time that they feel comfortable and safe.
