ONE of the major tournaments on the local golf circuit, the Zimbabwe Champion of Champions, will make a return on the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) calendar later this month after a lengthy absence.

The Champion of Champions will draw all club champions from over 40 golf clubs in the country, across all divisions, to battle for the sole Champion of Champions Zimbabwe titles.

The tournament — which has been slated for July 20-21 at Warren Hills Golf Club — is being organised by ZGA in association with Warren Hills Golf Club and Exec Golf Solutions and will be officially launched in the capital tomorrow.

ZGA vice-president Boniface Chigorimbo said they were excited with the return of the Champion of Champions tournament after almost 10 years.

“Obviously as ZGA we are very excited that the Champion of Champions tournament is back on the calendar as it brings together all the clubs, champions from around the country. For the local golf fans the tournament should be very exciting as all the different club champions from over 40 golf clubs in Zimbabwe will be aiming to outdo each other.

“This year’s tournament will be more special as it is being organised for a worthy cause as all the money which will be raised will be channelled towards the rehabilitation of Warren Hills Golf Club and also towards the ZGA development programmes,” said Chigorimbo.

Reigning Royal Harare Golf Club champion Gary Thompson was the last winner of the Champions of Champions tournament in 2004.

Having won the Royal Harare title recently, Thompson is expected to battle for honours again this year.

He is expected to face some competition from other club champions such as Chapman Golf Club’s Clive Nguru, Falcon Golf Club’s Biggy Chibvuri, and Hwange Golf Club’s Stephen Simukai, among others.

One of the organisers of the event, Ephraim Mashingaidze, said the tournament gave corporates a chance to market their products and services while also contributing to the development of the sport.

““The tournament gives the corporate world and individuals an executive marketing and golf sporting platform as club champions across all the divisions from all golf clubs in Zimbabwe battle for the Zimbabwe Club Championship title. It will also give them a golden opportunity to market their products and services and partner the brand whilst also assisting in grooming future national representatives as golf has become an Olympic sport.”

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s leading professional golfer Brendon De Jonge had a good outing at the weekend, with a share for 17th position at the US PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.

De Jonge fired rounds of 66, 68, 73 and 66 in the weather-delayed final round to see him grab a share of 17th place and $85 260 prize money.
