PAMUSHANA High School has vowed to go all the way and win the Copa-Cola Under 16 as the tournament enters the provincial stage this Friday.

Report by Henry Mhara

At least 184 schools are expected to converge at different provincial venues around the country to fight for a ticket to the national finals set for Sakubva High 1 on 12-14 July.

Provincial winners will be joined at the finals by defending champions Mzingwane High School and the host school.

Pamushana High School, from Masvingo Province, was beaten 1-0 in last year’s finals in Victoria Falls.

The school, famed for producing stars such as SuperSport and Warriors striker Simba Sithole, won the title in 2007. They want to repeat the same feat this year.

“We were very disappointed to lose in the finals last year and we are looking to do better this year. The challenge for us is to get past the provincial stage because it will be tough there,” said the school’s headmaster Johnson Madhuku who is also the president of NASH.

“If we get past the provinces, then I can assure you that we will get the title this year. We are looking forward to the games and we hope all the schools will field eligible players,” he added.

The tournament is open to players aged between 13-16 Madhuku singled out Mashoko High and Mwenezi as two schools that might give his side some trouble on Friday.

Pamushana will play host to the schools from Masvingo Province. At the finals, the winning schools from the 10 provinces will be grouped into four groups comprising three teams each.

Group A has Mzingwane and they will face provincial winners from Mashonaland West and the Midlands.

Sakubva High School are in Group C and will face winners from Mashonaland East and Masvingo.

Group B has Manicaland, Bulawayo and Mat North while Harare, Mash Central and Mat South make up Group D.

This year’s edition of Copa Coca-Cola is part of Coca-Cola’s global “Crazy for Good” campaign.
