Five hundred and sixty athletes from Mozambique, Botswana, Swaziland and South Africa took part in the tournament, 280 of which were young children. The tournament was held in Maputo and had male and female participants as well as mini-tennis, juniors, veterans and professionals.

The mini-tennis, juniors and veterans battled out for their respective titles from the 18th to the 19th of May, while the first day was also reserved for the Standard Bank Mozambique staff and clients to participate in the Social Standard Bank segment.

A spokesperson for Standard Bank Mozambique said the objective of the tournament was to transform tennis into a massive sport in the country by encouraging the participation of children as well as make Mozambique tennis become more professional by opening the Open to international participants.

“This is also part of our drive to develop sports in Mozambique and apart from tennis, Standard Bank sponsors the Mozambique National Soccer League (Moçambola) and Beach Volleyball,” the spokesperson said.
