Japanese ambassador to Zimbabwe Yonezo Fukuda handed over the donation to Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo after his ministry, in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration, requested for assistance.

Chombo expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for assisting the country in times of natural disasters.

“We are here again to receive the much-needed temporary shelter tents for the districts that were struck by the freak hailstorms in April. The unprecedented climatic changes which unleashed the storms left 1861 households needing emergency assistance,” Chombo said.

Fukuda said the donation was a token of the Japanese people’s sympathy for those affected by adverse weather patterns.

“This donation, which includes 100 tents and 2 000 blankets, will provide immediate assistance to families whose homes were destroyed. They are to be distributed to families especially in Mwenezi and Chiredzi districts of Masvingo province,” Fukuda said.

The material was sourced with the assistance of the Japan International Co-operation Agency.
