GLOBAL ACADEMY, a visual arts college, is set to premiere their debut film production Dust and Fortunes on July 20.

Scheduled for 7 Arts Theatre, Avondale, the premiere will also serve as the graduation ceremony for the academy’s film department students.

Written by Eresina Hwede and Justice Mokoena Chapwanya, the 1 hour 35 minute-long film is a story of dreams coming true defying disability and detraction.

Starring in the film are Nash Mphepho (Michael) and Chati Butau (Marufu).

The film also includes guest appearances by footballers Desmond Maringwa and Murape Murape.

Michael is a young and ambitious disabled boy who eats, dreams and lives soccer though by stature he can hardly kick a soccer ball. His uncle Marufu stands in his way and his dream to see Dynamos FC coming and playing against his remote soccer team Gomba FC.

Marufu is a good-for-nothing pipe dreamer who talks of draining water out of a rock like the biblical Moses.

He does not want to see boys playing soccer near his malnourished crops. Every time the boys put up soccer posts he comes and pulls them out and uses them for firewood.

The boys, including his nephew Michael, are not discouraged, erecting new ones each time.

Marufu takes his case to the village Headman but they ridicule him. He feels belittled and bypasses everyone going straight to the almost crumbling district administrator (DA)’s office to present his case.

Meanwhile, Michael has been secretly writing letters to Dynamos FC inviting them to come and play his team, coached by Wakona, a retired aged soccer player (played by Maringwa).

Dynamos finally agree to plough back into the community by playing Gomba FC at their makeshift pitch in a valley.

This is a dream come true for Michael and the members of the team. The DA sees this as a business opportunity as this becomes an annual event where all village teams should compete.

Marufu’s field is turned into a proper soccer pitch and business area.

Tatsunga Kachere Katsiga, the marketing and publicity manager of Global Academy said the premiere of the film would be a proper red carpet event to be graced by high profile guests.
