Acting national traffic spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said the Masvingo-bound bus crashed at the 237km peg with 58 passengers on board following an overtaking error.

“The driver was driving towards Masvingo and when he got at the 237km peg, he tried to overtake a haulage truck and in the process hit a cow and the headlights went off,” said Chakanza.

“As a result, he lost control of the bus which veered off the road, overturned and landed on its left side facing the opposite direction.”

He said the six passengers who died were taken to the Beitbridge  District Hospital mortuary while the injured passengers were admitted at the same hospital.

“We say to drivers when travelling during the night they should not overtake unnecessarily, they should check to see if the road is clear when they want to overtake. We also urge drivers to stick to speed limits and avoid speeding at night.

Travelling at safe speed is always better,” said Chakanza.

The latest accident follows shortly after yet another horrific accident which killed eight people along the Nembudziya-Sanyati Road on Sunday.

The previous day, five people had been killed in a kombi crash along the Karoi-Magunje Road in Mashonaland West Province.
