FLAMBOYANT musician Energy Mutodi could soon provide a new home for Alick Macheso’s ex-band members.

Report by Silence Charumbira

On Monday Mutodi met the trio of Noel Nyazanda, Obert Gomba and Jonasi Kasamba at Executive Hotel, along Samora Machel Avenue in Harare, where they had a lengthy meeting.

The trio quit Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo last week citing poor remuneration. Mutodi confirmed the meeting and said he would consider giving the three jobs if they want to join him.

“We met and we discussed a number of issues, among them, their idea of creating their own band. I discouraged them since I saw no one among them who could make a difference on the highly competitive sungura scene,” he said.

“There are too many sungura outfits and coming from such a split they would need to be extraordinary to make it. If, however, they ask me for jobs, I would employ whoever I see fit.”

Gift Katulika aka Shiga Shiga, who manages Mutodi’s band, is said to be mediating the whole process.

Shiga Shiga said the Orchestra Mberikwazvo deserters were yet to decide on their future.

“They have not made a decision as yet since they are still trying to negotiate with Macheso,” he said.

“Their idea is first to record their own album, but as Mutodi Express, our doors are open if they want to join us.”

Gomba refused to comment on the issue demanding to know our source. Several calls to Kasamba’s mobile phone went unanswered while Nyazanda’s mobile number was not reachable.

Mutodi is not new to band-member-snatching controversy.

Last year he took three of Peter Moyo’s band members.
