BINDURA — Mashonaland Central governor Martin Dinha has taken a dig at war veterans, accusing them of lying low after the liberation war and allowing “sell-outs” within Zanu PF to hijack the party leaving them wallowing in abject poverty.

Dinha made the utterances at the burial of provincial liberation war hero Chipo Gumunyu in Bindura on Monday after local war veterans demanded a farm to be set aside for their income-generating projects.
“The worst mistake which was ever done by war veterans was to relax soon after independence thinking the war was over. Sell-outs took over the party and left them to suffer in abject poverty,” Dinha said.
He also warned Zanu PF to urgently address in its ranks factionalism, which has reportedly ripped apart provincial structures, or risk losing the forthcoming harmonised elections.
“We will never win this coming election if factionalism is not addressed,” he said.
Dinha said the ghost of the March 2008 election, where some Zanu PF MPs decampaigned party leader President Robert Mugabe in what later became known as the Bhora Musango strategy, was likely to revisit the party if factionalism was not dealt with decisively.
Zanu PF recently set up a fire-fighting team led by national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo, secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa and national commissar Webster Shamu to quell widening fissures in all troubled provinces ahead of the party primary polls.
