BREAKING: Mugabe signs constitution

President Robert Mugabe signed the Zimbabwe Constitutional Bill into law at State House this afternoon.

Report by Tapiwa Zivira, Online Reporter

The new document- approved by over 90 percent of Zimbabweans in a referendum held in March- replaces the 1980 Lancaster House Constitution that came out of negotiations at the country’s independence from Britain.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials, diplomats, and representatives of non-governmental organisations.

Mugabe’s unity government partners, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Vice President Joice Mujuru, and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara were among those in attendance.

The formulation of a new constitution is part of the Global Political Agreement, a power sharing deal signed by the main political parties in 2008

The signing of the new constitution marks a major milestone towards the harmonised elections expected this year.

we now count 30days for a massive voter registration which makes it impossible for election to be held by the 29 of june considering the 14 days + for the proclamation date.

Now that His Excellency has signed the new constitution, he should announce the date for elections. We are sick and tired of Morgay masquerading as a Prime Minister.

He can also join the list as a senator, turiko tumaconstituency tuvatengesi vanonhonga panonepapo akapinda neproportional represetation. He will be wasting time contesting chigaro chamambo. My hearty congratulations to the people of Zimbabwe for reaching this milestone in the history of the Country. President Mugabe, PM Tsvangirai, DPM Mutambara, Welshman Ncube there are times in life when as leaders you have to forego your ego for the sake of progress. Compromise is not a lack of will power but an act of bravery. Although there maybe some hidden agendas as we go into electioneering the biggest hurdle is now overcome ie. implementation of a new consititution we MUST be respected. I also appeal to all the readers to refrain from using hate and abusive language but to now ernestly contribute ideas on how we can debate constructively on the way forward for our battered nation. Newspapers must also play their role in Nation building and stop devisive and biased reporting ZBC, please come to the party you are falling behind badly.

@Mukanya, wrong my friend! We are in this mess, having Moregay as PM for a number of reasons. Unoziva here chinonzi mucheka dzafa? The election was rigged by an environment of sanctions, the revolutionary party was also at the time affected by imposition of candidatesespecially by Didmus, that bred the tendency bhora musango, presiding civil servants were paid to doctor figures, all these factors militated against the revolutionary party. And Moregay was the prime beneficiary. We have addressed those now, we won’t be donating any votes this time. You get it?

    • mukoma May 22, 2013 at 9:26 pm #

saka morgananei nebhora musango yenyu iyoyo. For you own info, bhora musango was aimed at getting rid of mugabe since zanoids would campaign for everyone from councillor to senator and tell people not to vote for mugabe. that same man will be standing and bhora musango will be worse coz he is even more advanced in age. anyway kana mutasa aiita imposition of candidates hanti idambudziko renyu kubato renyu ikoko, morgan akwana papi

    • Justin May 23, 2013 at 4:31 am #

have been following what u have been saying. To be honest you have run out of ideas. You should be telling us why we should come back to Zanu instead to fanning hate. and that is the prime reason why people are running away from your party. Talking about the liberation struggle should be left to teachers and professors now coz thats what is keeping us in 1979 whilst other countrise are moving forward. GROW UP!!!!!!

  27. Simweena Bantu May 22, 2013 at 4:23 pm #

@Philosopher, exactly my point, we have watched Moregay dream all the way to Europe, USA, East, West Africa enjoying the fantasy of a Premier. It’s over. But as you mention, it’s healthy to dream coz other synonyms will call that a vision.

this is Zimbabwe i have been praying for. A Zimbabwe where leadership sit together and formulate what is theirs. As for the dates of elections, i know the inconveniences caused to the economy, social, political and spiritual platforms, but as long as brother is against brother, tribe against tribe, region against region because of politics, lets delay them His Excellencies (President and Prime Minister) until we know that we are Zimbabweans and there is no blood worth loosing. No need to rush because of SADC, AU or outside force when Zimbabweans are still threatening to kill each other. and by the time the dates are pronounced, the new constitution would have aligned each other’s mindset to a new Zimbabwe. How i love my country, even Biti cant resist the future.

i have the spine because me and my people defeated an armed zanu jongwe since independence and our northern cousins got the confidence to challenge the chief vampire after seeing us doing it successfully!!!!!!

Its a step in the right direction. Gone Lancaster in comes Zimbabwean written constitution. Although it is not perfect but it is a better devil. It marks the end of of that man’s reign. Whether stealing the votes or not at least we know that he has to at some point. If he stills the votes it means he will stay for another 10 years but they will one day come to an end.
