KWEKWE – Zanu PF activist Blessing Chikwira, arrested last month over allegations of charging towards MDC-T secretary-general Tendai Biti and attempting to stab him using a home-made knife, appeared at the magistrates’ court yesterday.
Report by Blessed Mhlanga
Chikwira gate-crashed an MDC-T rally where he advanced towards the party’s secretary-general, who was addressing the gathering, allegedly intending to use the knife on him.
He, however, denied the charge saying he was nowhere near the venue of the meeting.
Chikwira was arrested on March 13 after the alleged attempt on Biti’s life at the rally held at Mbizo 4 shopping centre.
Chikwira, through his lawyer Valentine Mutatu, applied for discharge at the close of the State case saying the State had failed to lay concrete evidence against him.
He denied ever going anywhere near the MDC-T rally or having a knife on his person at any given point, let alone having attempted to attack Biti.
“The accused denies the charge and, in fact, states that he never had a knife on him, but that knife was planted on him by members of the MDC-T. At no given time did he attempt to attack Biti,” his lawyer told the court.
