MUTARE — A 19-year-old unlicensed commuter omnibus driver is expected to appear in court this week facing a culpable homicide charge after he allegedly fatally knocked down a blind city woman last Thursday.

REPORT BY STAFF REPORTER

Manicaland assistant police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxon Chananda identified the suspect as Obey Mudzingwa.

According to police, the accident happened as the now-deceased Lydia Maonera (36) was being assisted by her 10-year-old daughter Gracious, to cross the road. The woman had her two-month-old baby strapped on her back.

“As they were crossing, Mudzingwa appeared with his commuter omnibus and Gracious sensed imminent danger and she fled leaving her mother in the road resulting in the accident.

“Maonera sustained serious head injuries and she was rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital where she died on admission,” Chananda said.

Her two-month-old baby was treated and discharged.
