The four-day tournament, which ended on Tuesday, attracted junior players from all over the country who battled it out on five age groups from the Under-10s to the Under-18s.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony at the Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC), TZ administrator Cliff Nhokwara said he was pleased with the turnout of players for the tournament.

“On behalf of TZ, I would like to congratulate the organisers of the tournament for managing to successfully host such a big tournament.

The turnout was tremendous and we are looking forward to more tournaments like these being held in Bulawayo,” Nhokwara said.

Bulawayo upcoming tennis star Mehluli Sibanda lost to Harare’s Mark Chigadzira 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in a closely contested Under-16 final, while Latifah Yasini of Harare, who has represented the juniors at the national level along with Sibanda, made an easy job of Wendy Rundhu (Mutare) 6-4, 6-3 in the girls’ Under-18 singles final.

Mutare’s Michael Gutu beat Bulawayo’s Muzingaye Sibanda to clinch the boys’ Under-18 singles final.

Meanwhile, the Tarryn-Leigh De Souza tournament kicked off yesterday at various venues in Bulawayo with the same participants that took part in the just-ended Bulawayo Juniors Open Tennis tournament expected to feature.

Yesterday saw round robin matches being played for all age groups with the Bulawayo Country Club hosting the Under-10s and U-18s, while BAC hosts the Under-16s and U-12s with Girls’ College hosting the Under-14s and U-16s matches.
