THE Book Café will tonight host yet another poetry slam themed Knowledge of Self as part of the House of Hunger series.

The theme, which was a phrase coined by acclaimed US hip-hop artiste and poet KRS-ONE to express the views of the “Stop The Violence Movement”, was adopted for the poetry slam to encourage poets to dig deep, consider and express their understanding of their own identities and realities.

According to a statement from Pamberi Trust, the slam will consist of three competitive rounds with guidelines to provoke deeper thoughts and offer the audience a clearer understanding on the subject.

In round one, termed “The Definition of . . . ” poets will be invited to bring products of their choice within the theme of knowing oneself.

In round two termed “Express your art in your African”, artistes will paint their own tale with the brush of their own words.

“My liberties remain my own” is the theme for round three that allows poets who have made it to the third round free reign over what they choose to recite.

The platform has run for almost eight years, presenting a mixture of eclectic performances which encompass different languages, backgrounds and points of view. It is open to all poets, offering them the opportunity to freely express themselves and be true to what it is that sets them apart.

According to the statement, “Poets register to perform with the MC before the event starts at 2pm and there is always a promise of high energy deliveries and enthusiastic audience support for those who participate.”

While there are a number of crowd favourites who have been performing at the slam over time, there is always room and need for fresh voices and new ideas. Poets who have not yet had the experience are encouraged to come out and show their “smoke” on the open stage, hear what others are doing and to join the fun.
