KWEKWE — THE MDC-T youth assembly has moved to endorse its own members as candidates ahead of primary elections to be held this week.

Report by Blessed Mhlanga

MDC-T youth assembly president Solomon Madzore, secretary Promise Mkwananzi and other top members of the assembly descended on Redcliff on Sunday to endorse the candidature of their organising secretary Happymore Chidziva as party candidate for the parliamentary elections.

Chidziva is fighting for the ticket to represent the MDC-T in Redcliff constituency against the town’s former executive mayor Rogers Chisi and deregistered lawyer Tapera Sengweni, who is the Midlands North youth chairperson.

Speaking at the launch of Chidziva’s campaign which was also attended by Mbizo MP Settlement Chikwinya, Mkwananzi said the youth assembly was merely endorsing its resolution of having more youths in Parliament and was, therefore, not afraid to endorse Chidziva ahead of other candidates.

“We make no apologies for the position we have taken as an assembly to endorse Chidziva here as our candidate. This is part of our resolution as an assembly and we are going to ensure that it is implemented,” Mkwananzi said.

The youth assembly said it would camp in all constituencies where their members were contesting in the primary elections until the candidate was elected into office.

“We will not leave until our members are sworn into office.  This is our pledge, we are going to be in Redcliff until Chidziva is the MP,” Mkwanazi said.

Madzore could, however, not be drawn to explain why the assembly was backing Chidziva instead of Sengweni, also a youth and member of the assembly.

“I can’t publicly say who my choice is between these two members of the youth assembly, but in my heart I know I am endorsing this one, but I can’t say that aloud,” he said pointing at Chidziva.

The MDC-T has come under fire ahead of harmonised elections for trying to ring-fence party bigwigs from being challenged in the primaries.

The Redcliff seat is currently held by Zanu PF’s Isheunesu Muza.
