GWERU mayor Tedious Chimombe says his council has started scouting for private property developers to partner the local authority in developing housing stands to ease the city’s accommodation crisis.

Report by Stephen Chadenga

He said the cash-strapped local authority was finding it difficult to reduce the housing backlog which currently has 25 000 homeseekers. “While council continues to make efforts in the provision of houses, the economic situation of the past 10 or more years made it difficult for council to service stands,” Chimombe told NewsDay  yesterday.

He said plans to develop a new suburb, to be named Mkoba 21, were at an advanced stage.

“We plan to service close to 7 000 stands for the planned new suburb, Mkoba 21. These are part of our efforts to give quality service to residents,” he said, adding the project would have high, medium and low-density houses.
