The three, bassist Bakaniya Teka, rhythmist George Baya — who will lead the band — and vocalist identified only as Taurai, left Zim All Stars led by Zhakata last month after the musician devoted himself to gospel ministry at United Families International Church.

Speaking to NewsDay yesterday, Teka, who was one of the key band members, said they decided to leave the musician who was devoting himself to the work of God.

“We were going unpaid sometimes because we had no shows on weekends,” Teka said.

“He was taking his effort to the church. That gave us the courage to start our own things.” He said they would be joined by some of the band members who left the musician in the past.

Zhakata was not willing to comment on the issue saying he had decided not to talk to members of the print media.

“I will not talk to members of the print media because of some reasons which I will not reveal,” Zhakata said.

However, sources close to the Mugove hit maker yesterday revealed that the musician was already a pastor at the United Families International Church led by Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa.

“He is already a pastor at the church and it explains why he is no longer staging circular shows,” he said.

He added that it was becoming difficult for the musician to pay band members who then decided to move on. His manager Soul Mubvumbi was reluctant to comment on the issue referring all questions to his boss instead.

However, the two groups are likely to come on a collision course as the group Vagoni Vebasa is likely to play some of Zhakata’s songs at live shows.
